Kirkburton held a selection meeting on 9th July 2018 to select a candidate to stand in the 2019 Local Elections. Existing Councillor John Taylor, who is the Deputy Leader of the Kirklees Conservative Group and was first elected in 2015 was unanimously selected by members.
Speaking after the Meeting Cllr Taylor said, "I am honoured to have been selected once more to represent the Kirkbuton ward where I live, I remain passionate about protecting the identity of our local villages and communities and ensuring that Kirkburton has a strong voice speaking up for people at Kirklees Council."
Cllr Taylor was selected at the branch meeting which was held in Shepley Library, which was a fitting location as Cllr Taylor has been an outspoken opponent of Labour's plans to close Libraries and continues to champion Libraries as being at the heart of their communities and recognises the crucial role they play in supporting lifelong learning and providing a welcome space for people who may be vulnerable or lonely.
"As part of my campaign I will continue to defend our local libraries and the wide range of activities and volunteering opportunities that they present. I will vigourously oppose any attempt by this Labour Council to close Libraries in Kirkburton." he said.
