In addition to enjoying getting out and meeting with members and local residents I also see a key part of my role being listening to and supporting businesses as they strive to grow and prosper. This was a crucial role during the pandemic as the Chancellor sought to protect businesses and employees from the impacts of the restrictions and lockdowns but it is equally important now as we drive the recovery.
I have been out promoting businesses and apprenticeships and met recently with the Rail Minister Andrew Stephenson in Clayton West to look at opportunities for AUS Ltd, a local Business that provides equipment and services to the Rail Industry, especially now that the electrification of the trans Pennine Line is moving into the delivery phase. I’ve also met with Network Rail as well to look at the detailed plans for the upgrade to the Trans Pennine Line which will mean more, faster and more comfortable trains between our constituency, Leeds, Manchester and beyond.
It was also a focus on skills and apprenticeships in Skelmanthorpe where I met with Electroparts who make electronic parts for a range of local and national manufacturers and are proud of their skills training programme.
Another business I have met with recently was Integrate families in Denby Dale who provide support to children with special educational needs, an issue I have raised in the House and was pleased to see the Conservative Group at Kirklees Council find money in their budget amendment to increase the funding for.
